Human health and disease- lesson summary

1. Health: It can be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.
2. Diseases: The conditions in which one or more organs of the body are not working properly, characterised by various signs and symptoms are called diseases
3. Immunity: The overall ability of the body to fight against disease causing microorganisms with the help of immune system is called immunity
4. AIDS: The term AIDS stands for Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome
5. Cancer: Cancer is the uncontrolled cell division leading to the formation of a mass of cells called a tumour
6. Drugs and alcohol abuse: The drugs which are commonly abused are opioids, cannabinoids and coca alkaloids
7. Adolescence and Drug/Alcohol Abuse: Adolescence means both ‘a period’ and ‘a process’ during which a child becomes mature in terms of his/her attitudes and beliefs for effective participation in society.
8. Addiction and Dependence: Addiction is a psychological attachment to certain effects–such as euphoria and a temporary feeling of well-being –associated with drugs and alcohol.
9. Lymphoid organs: The organs where origin and/or maturation and proliferation of lymphocytes occur are called lymphoid organs.
10. Lymphoid tissue: Lymphoid tissue is located within the lining of the respiratory, digestive and urogenital tracts.
